The Deacon's Bench

Overheard in the rectory: no compliments, please

posted by deacon greg kandra

This was conveyed to me today by the parishioner in the story, who wanted to know if I’d heard about it.

It was concerning my homily last weekend. Knowing the priest involved, I thought this was hysterical — and typical:

Parishioner to priest: Father, someone sitting behind me said something so nice about the Deacon’s homily. After he finished, one person turned to another and said, “Very impressive.” I thought that was so nice. Will you pass that along to Deacon Greg?

Priest: Absolutely not.

He was true to his word.

Technically, that's hearsay. Can you really claim that one was "overheard" in the Rectory?

Well, it's my category, I can do what I want with it. :-)This is just a place for funny, bizarre, sometimes ridiculous soundbites from parish life. And this one, I have to say, still makes me laugh. :-) DGK

Rueful laughter of recognition from me! Lots of stories to tell (not hearsay!) but 98% unprintable!

Big day in the Big Easy: 10 new deacons
Deacon Mike Talbot has the scoop: 10 men today were ordained as Permanent Deacons for the Archdiocese of New Orleans. This group of men was formally selected on the day the evacuation of New Orleans began as Hurricane Katrina approached. The immediate aftermath of the storm for this class would be

"Gesu Bambino," anyone? This is one of my favorites, and nobody does it better than these gals: Kathleen Battle and Frederica von Staade. Enjoy.
