After a long, long, long wait — 46 months — Detroit will be getting a new bishop to replace retiring Cardinal Adam Maida (who put in his papers during the papacy of John Paul II!).

The Motor City’s new guy is Bishop Allen Vigneron of Oakland (but originally from Detroit) and you can read all about him right here.

Ecclesiastical “rumor” has Bishop Salvatore R. Matano (currently bishop of the Diocese of Burlington, Vermont) going to St. Louis.

So then Oakland is open. Will the vacancies ever end? You would think they would give Oakland someone new at the same time.Maybe these should be like baseball trades where Detroit would get Bishop Vigneron and Oakland would get Cardinal Maida as co-adjutor and a Bishop to be named later plus cash. They then select a rising star from the Detroit Archdiocese with Cardinal Maida’s help.
