I’ve said,

“If I’m not on fire, it’s not urgent.”

I mean it.  And I repeat that to myself on a weekly basis.  It is so easy to get wrapped up into a false sense of immediacy.  Another set of words I school myself with frequently are,

“I will not be governed by the tyranny of immediacy.”

I’ve learned, over time, that even things that have the appearance of requiring that I drop everything and tend to them… mostly don’t.  With my own priorities I like to pretend I’m a bakery and I tell each one of them to “take a number and sit down.”  Ah – it’s a pleasure to have those days in which I can tend my many priorities in such an orderly fashion.  And for those days when that protocol does not work?  Just breathe!
