Wednesday is Question and Answer Day on the blog…a time for exploring many of the questions that people have recently asked about the nine Conversations with God books and the New Spirituality. Here’s this week’s entry…
Topic: How to connect with the Divine
Question asked by: Brett
Question: My question has to do with inspiration. Since it has been some time now from the very beginning of CwG, has anything changed in the way you hear God? It seems that in the beginning of Book 3 (pg. 7), there was a delay in inspiration. You blamed God for not showing up and God blamed you for not listening. In hindsight, do you now see what was keeping you from hearing Him? In hindsight, is there anything that you can share with us about developing our listening?
Neale’s Response: In answer to your question I would say that I have learned that God is accessible to me all the time. By that I mean literally all the time.
In the old days I thought I had to do something in particular to access the experience of my Conversations with God. In the old days I thought I had to play just the right music, have just the right amount of light coming into the room, create just the right atmosphere, circumstance, and situation.
I have learned in the intervening years that…

…it is possible for me — and for everyone else — to “connect” with God on a moment’s notice, without any need for preparation or special circumstances whatsoever. I have learned that I can call forth the experience of divine wisdom, divine love, divine understanding, divine compassion, divine patience, divine awareness, and yes, divinity itself whenever and wherever I choose.
I am clear that it is very risky to say this. It could sound very arrogant to someone who did not know where I was coming from. Yet it is God’s greatest gift to all of humanity that God makes God self available in the ways I have just described, to every person in every moment.
What I have learned about “developing our listening” is that it is a process of trusting that divinity will flow through you as you the moment that you allow it to. God only awaits your invitation.
The desire to help others in any way that we can has been for me a key to opening the doorway to God. I find that when I am selfish in my desire and self-serving in my agenda it is difficult to “bring through” the messages of God clearly. I get in my own way. But when my motivation is clean, when my purpose is clear, and when my reason for doing anything has to do with bringing joy and wisdom and insight and help to others, all the divinity in the universe flows through me.

God said to me in CwG, “Your life is not about you. It is about everyone whose life you touch.” I have come to understand and appreciate that message very deeply. I try to live it every day. I surely do not always succeed, but I try very hard. I try to take the focus off of myself and place it on to another. I look to see were I can be of service, where a word or two from me might make some small difference. And then I place my energies there, and I call upon all the energy of the universe to join me in that process, to supply me with exactly what I need to hear clearly the voice of God.
Whereas in the beginning of my experience I was having a conversation with God in hopes of solving my own problems, these days I have my conversations with God in hopes of being of service to someone else. It is difficult for me to say this to you, Brett, because it sounds very self-serving and self aggrandizing. But you asked me a question, and I must give you an honest answer. I trust you’ll believe me when I tell you that I’m not trying to make myself look good here. The fact is that I’m not the kind of person that I would like to be nearly enough of the time. Yet I have learned, if I have learned nothing else, that when I extend myself on behalf of those who walk with me on this path, my channel to God is wide open.
What was “keeping me from hearing him” in the past was my own self-involvement. As I said, I’m still more self-involved that I wish I was. But I am making progress. I see my tendencies. I see my weaknesses. I see my ego. And I’m trying very hard to reverse my proclivity to remain focused on myself most of the time.
I hope this answer has helped you, and I send you my very best thoughts.
