(This weblog creates, for us all, a chance to meet at the interaction of Life and the New Spirituality. It is written by the author of Conversations with God, the worldwide best-selling series of books. The “New Spirituality” is defined by the author as “a new way to experience and express our natural impulse toward the Divine without making others wrong for the way in which they are doing it.”)

HIGHLIGHTS OF TODAY’S BLOG…
* World change IS possible
* A group of 1000 can do it all
* The secret is to invite humanity to change its beliefs
* You can play a role in this process

(This is the eighth in a series of blogs on the seemingly unending conflict in our world. The series makes the point that there is a way to avoid the constant conflict and killing upon the earth, and that way is for the earth’s people to adopt a New Spirituality — a new “story” about God, about Life, and about Each Other.)
We spoke here yesterday about the state of our world and what is going to be required to change it. And I said that our challenge in the first quarter of the 21st Century is to change our beliefs. Because beliefs create behaviors. Everything we do arises out of how we think. Every choice we make emerges from our ideas about life. If we want our behaviors to change, we must alter the beliefs that sponsor them. We must invite human beings to embrace a new set of beliefs that more wondrously serve them.
Yet how can we do this? And who can do it?
Ah, yes, that is the question of the day, isn’t it? And the answer is…

…we must find a way to gather, to collect, to coagulate the energies of the many people around the world who earnestly desire to engage in this process of changing the course and direction of humanity’s tomorrow. The job of altering our future is not something that one person can do alone. This is obvious. Yet it is something that can be done by a relatively small handful of people. The trick is to find those people, to inspire them, to motivate them, to engage them as full participants and active partners in the process.

I’ve often said as I have traveled around the world that if we could gather 1,000 people from every corner of the globe and join them together in a commitment to create a new tomorrow, a new way to be human, a new approach to life on this planet, we could work miracles. What must be done if we are to invite humanity to embrace a new set of beliefs is that we must find a way to leverage individual intent, magnifying it to globally impacting proportions.
There are many people around the world who know that the answer to the human family’s problems has nothing to do with economics, it has nothing to do with politics, and it certainly has nothing to do with the wielding of military might. There are people — and plenty of them — all over this planet who deeply understand that the problem facing humanity in this first quarter of the 21st Century is a spiritual problem, and that it can only be solved by spiritual means.
The challenge before us is clear. The opportunity ahead is self-evident. We must create a new form of spiritual expression upon the earth. For when I say that we must change our beliefs, what I am actually saying is that we must change the way that we are “spiritual.” The word “beliefs” is simply a two-syllable utterance that means the same thing as “spirituality.”
Our spirituality is nothing more than the sum total of our most sacred beliefs. These are the beliefs that drive the engine of our experience. They are the beliefs that form the foundation of our deepest understandings and our highest ideals. They are what motivate us. They are what inspire us. They are what lead us into the physical expression that we call life upon the earth.
What is required is for us to create the space of possibility for a new spirituality to emerge on this planet; a new way for us to express our natural impulse toward the divine without making others wrong for the way in which they are doing it. For the way in which we hold the idea of God in our hearts determines the way in which we hold the experience of life in our bodies. Our every expression, our every movement in the day-to-day of our lives, our decision to pick up a gun or put it down, to start an argument or let it go, to become violent or to become loving, is based firmly and irrevocably in what we determine to be our grandest spiritual awareness.
I am so pleased to have been given the opportunity to place this blog on Beliefnet.com. For this is where people of belief gather. This is where people of belief join together for thoughtful dialogue, for meaningful interaction, for inspiration and upliftment. Perhaps this is where I can find the remainder of the 1,000 people (several hundred are already engaged) who might join hands in common purpose, who might gather together under the banner of a glorious idea and what at first glance may seem to be an impossible mission, but what is, in reality, the invitation that Life has given to Life Itself: Change our cultural story and change our collective reality before our collective reality changes itself by itself in ways that we never dreamt of, desired, or could possibly want for our children.
On Thursday I will tell you how to become one of those 1,000 people, should you choose to.
Stay tuned.
