Texas Republicans debate “motives” of American muslims

This is yet more evidence of an ingrained Islamophobia among the core GOP faithful that is both ugly and yet sadly predictable. At a Republican meeting in Fort Worth, Texas, the idea that muslim citizens of the United States are inherently disloyal and untrustworthy by virtue of their faith was not only entertained, it was actively promoted by a guest speaker, Dorrie O’Brien:

In her presentation to about 80 people, O’Brien said that Muslims are intent on converting the Western world to Islam. She described as “stealth jihad” a malicious effort by Muslims to subvert schools, local governments and banks throughout the country.

O’Brien reviewed the five pillars of Islam, noting that one of them is zakat, which means to give a percentage of one’s income to charity. “There is a tremendous amount of proof out there that the zakat is now funding terrorism,” she said.

O’Brien also compared the Quran to the Bible and dismissed any suggestion that atrocities committed by Christians in the past were relevant to a debate about the present.

“I am not going to get into a theological discussion tonight, but I will flatly say, no, there is no way we are praying to the same God,” she said.

The Tarrant County medical examiner, Nizam Peerwani, is muslim and requested time to rebut O’Brien’s comments. Coward that she is, she left before Peerwani spoke, but he did at least have an atempt to try and provide the assembled Republicans some measure of reality.

Imagine the scenario in which a similar proposition and comments were made about American Jews, or Catholics, or atheists. While I am glad that Mr. Peerwani was given the opportunity to speak, the idea that he had to at all is unconscionable.

Muslims are not a fifth column in America, seeking the destruction of our nation. Like every other group, we deserve, and demand, the benefit of the doubt as to our loyalty. We should not have to undergo loyalty tests or other such grotesque violations of our trust and our dignity.

This is the modern GOP – islamophobic to the core.

And yet the GOP doesn’t understand why minorites (re:non WASP males) have issues with their party. At least when the Dems come out as pro-choice they don’t pretend to not understand why the Catholic Church objects.

Even worse, as you can see over here, there are actually factions in our army that actually seek to convert the Islamic world to Christianity, and which are using our military presence there as a framework for so doing. Even when it’s not in power, the GOP just keeps getting creepier.

    This is disgusting.
I would say more — because there is definitely more to say — but anything more I would say would detract from that central message. This is just disgusting.

With the great migration to the Obama camp, most moderates that have previously supported the GOP defected to the Obama camp focused on rebuilding this nation from the endless greed, paranoia and financial destruction of the past 10 years.
What is left in the GOP are idealogs that refuse to accept the realities of today. Principled Pragmatism is the golden rule and what is left in the GOP is certainly not that.
Many of the core principles of the GOP and their rich heritage is currently lost – and that is unfortunate.
I will warn us though that we need to have the GOP resurrect itself as the party of Lincoln. It also scares me to have one party become too powerful and start doing leadership worship of Obama. History shows such one sided worship almost always leads to corruption in the future. We need the GOP pragmatic leaders to wake up and answer the call. These are the tough times for the GOP and I hope their calls for leadership will be answered. It is the fundamental of our democracy to have a strong opposition that provides an alternative view not this bullshit islamaphobic idealogy.
You republicans out there that disagree, come forth and say something! Wake up and get to work! We have a nation to rebuild. Stop hiding behind thinly veiled racist leaders! Stop trying to use fear as way to dissuade citizens and instead be constructive and show an alternative viable path!
