‘You Can’t Be a Saint’

posted by Chattering Mind

Sweet essay here on BustedHalo.com (the online mag for seekers in their 20s and 30s). In it, author Jeff Guhin gets into a conversation on saintly behavior with the Catholic teens he teaches.

Yes, this is a sweet, sweet essay. While I was reading I was thinking how seductive life is today for teens and tweens. So much stuff to plug into! Non-attachment is more illusive than ever, isn’t it? I remember going through my own campaign for sainthood when I was six. I wore a blue veil and a white gown left over from an old Halloween costume. Sometimes I wore a curly blonde wig which I bought for 25 cents at a church rummage sale. Fearing I’d get lice, my mom washed it in hot water. Instant dredlocks. I wore it still. I made everyone call me “St. Leslie”. I wrote my own prayers until my best friend, Annie, told me I had to use the “old ones.” So I did. For a while I was preoccupied with getting my hands on incense. Never did. I thought about what I’d wear to have my picture taken for Holy Cards. (blue robe, cross, halo) I asked my parish priest what I’d have to give up to be a saint. When he mentioned kissing boys on the school bus I threw in the towel.

First, to poster Daria, thanks for the sweet story. It made me chuckle. Secondly, thanks for posting this wonderful essay. We all should/should have had more teachers like this in catholic high school.

CM's Final Posts: You Can Fill the Space
Eighteen years ago, I wrote an article for a magazine that got me called in for a taped interview with a Fox TV morning news anchor. Being an effective communicator and a skillful public speaker was a dream of mine at the time. And still is. After some 30 minutes of prep with the station's hair-and-

Websites to Visit, Blogs to Read
Here are some blogs and websites I like. It's not a complete list. But it's a start. The first is called New Moon Journal and it is written by Michele Bailey-Lessirard, a life coach, collage artist, and "shamanic astrologer." On the opening page of her site, you'll find a little slide show of her am

And Finally, This:
Place your burden at the feet of the Lord of the Universe who accomplishes everything. Remain all the time steadfast in the heart, in the Transcendental Absolute. God knows the past, present and future. He will determine the future for you and accomplish the work. What is to be done will be done at
