Remember: It’s About the Teachings, Not the Teacher

Take a walk down Memory Lane when you check out Beliefnet’s slideshow of fallen religious leaders. And remember this advice from His Holiness the Dalai Lama: “Rely on the teachings to evaluate a guru: do not have blind faith, but also [have] no blind criticism.”

The Bnet rouges gallery of fallen religious leaders definitely underrepresented Catholic priests; they could have created an entire list of pedophile Catholic clergy all its own. That said, however, I commend Bnet for including the vile Bernard Law on the list. He committed no acts of abuse himself we arew aware of, but he did wilfully enable years and years of sexual abuse of children by a cadre of monstrous pedophiles in his employ. Today he lives the life of a “Catholic Riley” in the Vatican, with a dedicated staff. No justice there.

The Bnet slide show was like watching an ecumenical version of the Old Testament (or maybe a police line up?) After the Golden Days of televangelism (1980-97) and the Bakker and Swaggart scandlas in ’87, one would think a wiser audience of believers would have emerged. Yet the growth of televangelism, fringe “religions” and the unconcealed wealth of the Crouches, B.Hahn, TD Jakes and J.Meyer seem to suggest otherwise.
