How to Host a More Spiritual Baby Shower

This month’s Mothering magazine offers fabulous ways to honor a pregnant friend at her baby’s shower.

* Pass a “wisdom book” around and ask each guest to contribute words of encouragement.

* Tell guests to bring canned goods for a local women’s shelter and have everyone at the party join hands to pray for all the babies and mothers of the world.

* Throw the shower in a park on hill and have guests write little blessings for mom and the babe, which can then be tied or taped to a kite and flown by the group on a string.

There’s more cool stuff. Look for the magazine on your local newstand.

For my babyshower the hostess honored me and it gave me confidence to face the challenges ahead. She asked each woman to tell how they knew me and what our relationship meant to them. They said some of the most beautiful things. They helped me to move on knowing that I had made a positive impact in the past and that I would do the same for this new chapter in my life with my new baby. To hear the ladies talk about me in a loving way made me feel good about myself when I was feeling pretty insecure.>

I recently attended a baby shower and was a little put off by having a blank book shoved at me the minute I walked in the door and asked to write my words of wisdom on child-raising for the mother-to-be, whom I barely knew. I am at an age where I can hardly remember what I did yesterday, and most of my child-raising experience I would just as soon forget. There were a lot of things I would do differently if I had it to do over again. Maybe my words of wisdom should have been telling her what NOT to do. But I couldn t think of a thing to say, when put on the spot like that. Maybe it was just the way it was presented. Sometimes this sort of thing can backfire.>

Like Mary, I was asked to be wise-on-demand at a recent baby shower. I don’t even remember what I wrote, but expect it was more like an SAT essay than Hallmark. So I’m also skittish about these intensely personal ideas, no matter how well-intentioned. HOWEVER, I did have a much better experience at another shower! About a month before the shower, the hosts asked each attendee to write whatever they wanted, from their favorite tip, poem, recipe, lullabye or rememberance. They then assembled all of this into a book which was bound and illustrated. The mom-to-be received the original and each attendee received a color photocopy. Years later it remains one of my most cherished posessions, and I was just one of many contributors! In lieu of shower gifts, one of my neighbors instead asked each attendee to make a donation to a non-profit in her baby’s name, and share why they chose that charity. Some wrote formal letters, others did audio tapes/CDs and others, videos, all addressed to the new baby. At the shower, we watched, read and listened. All of us learned new things about the giver as well as the new mother/parents. It was one of the most loving showers I ever attended. Today that 9-year old “baby” has a grove of trees and two stars named after her (Thea). And ever since she could write, Thea has been pen-pals with two children who have been sponsored in her name by her two aunts.>
