Mothering Mag: ‘Leave Baby’s Car Seat in the Car’

posted by chattering mind

The May-June issue of “Mothering” has a good article on baby-parent attachment and the pernicious influence of those baby car seats thought to be nifty since you can tote your child around everywhere in them, from car to store to home and back, without touching or interacting very much. Use a sling when you’re moving around, author Catherine McKenzie says. It forces the two of you to snuggle and relate. Here’s an example of celebrities doing the right thing.

they say babies in less developed countries where they are physically close to their mothers almost all the time cry MUCH less than babies in industrialized countries, where the emphasis is more on fostering independence. not sure if there’s a right and a wrong here — the babes are being raised to live in totally different societies, after all — but it is fascinating to consider the different ways of relating to little ones.>

I sent this article to my friend Claire so we could laugh together across the ocean separating us. When her first child was a colicky infant, she’d wrap her around her own body in an old peasant shirt, like the slings linked here, only sloppy. It was the only thing that worked. And something about that daytime closeness led to longer sleeps through the night (eventually). By the time child number six came around, Claire had designer slings in tweed and Liberty prints, all of which she sewed herself. I can’t tell you how hard I laughed remembering the “prototype” slings. Thanks for this trip down memory lane.>

CM's Final Posts: You Can Fill the Space
Eighteen years ago, I wrote an article for a magazine that got me called in for a taped interview with a Fox TV morning news anchor. Being an effective communicator and a skillful public speaker was a dream of mine at the time. And still is. After some 30 minutes of prep with the station's hair-and-

Websites to Visit, Blogs to Read
Here are some blogs and websites I like. It's not a complete list. But it's a start. The first is called New Moon Journal and it is written by Michele Bailey-Lessirard, a life coach, collage artist, and "shamanic astrologer." On the opening page of her site, you'll find a little slide show of her am

And Finally, This:
Place your burden at the feet of the Lord of the Universe who accomplishes everything. Remain all the time steadfast in the heart, in the Transcendental Absolute. God knows the past, present and future. He will determine the future for you and accomplish the work. What is to be done will be done at
