While we’re on the topic of how to say something, or (in my case) how to say something from your hideout in the bathroom, here’s a great post from James over at Finding Optimism on “Ways to Insults Someone with Depression.” Thanks to Larry Parker for mentioning it.
Here are James’s favorite ones, but go to his post (by clicking here) to read the whole thing. And you might consider stuffing this piece of literature in every family member’s stocking at Christmas. Just to make for a nice and comfortable holiday.

“What you need is a good kick up the backside.”
“Go out and buy yourself some clothes. That will pick you up.”
“Are you sure you don’t have a mental problem?”
“How about I cook you a good meal. That will make things better.”
“Have you tried acupuncture?”
“Get a job!”
And the all time best:
“Why don’t you try not being depressed.”

On that same post, he links to an article on things you SHOULD say, “Things to Say to Someone With Depression.” That’s an excellent post as well. You could include that in stockings, as well. Or, better yet, just ask James to host your family holiday. He’s coming to my house this year.
