LGBT Faith News: Pray Away the Gay… Or Teach About It?

posted by Nicole Neroulias

You know it’s an election cycle when there’s even more gay-related religion news than usual, beyond the usual headlines about marriage, parenting, ordination, DADT in the military, etc.

On that topic, two stories in particular are rocking Christian America’s “is gay OK?” fault line:

Isn’t “Praying Away the Gay” considered a form of mental torture by the American Psychiatric community? Or at least deeply frowned upon from those who are best qualified to opine on its impacts on mental health?

God gave us minds to use for the benefit of others. That which was once feared is now embraced – race, womanhood, the ocean and the stars & planets. Information is liberating, and the truth shall set you free. Knowing more about LGBT people makes them less sinister and less threatening.

Hiding in a billow of misty prayer simply emphasizes the mystery and dread that has plagued people who are different. We should use our minds and not promote fearful ignorance. Bachman’s husband may even be masking some personal history and preferences that she would rather not be revealed. For criminals, you should follow the money; for charlatans you should put on a fan and let the mist and smoke dissipate, revealing the mirrors and manipulations beneath.

Alaska Airlines: High Payers No Longer Offered Sky Prayers
Alaska Airlines, now the country's seventh-largest airline, has announced it will stop offering prayer cards with its in-flight meals. (It's just raining religion news in the great unchurched Pacific Northwest lately.) I've flown Alaska several times since moving to Seattle, but I confess that I'

Washington's Gay Marriage Debate: Clergy vs. Clergy
I reported for Reuters at the Washington state Capitol yesterday, covering the public hearings on a gay marriage bill -- and in between, the breaking news that the state Senate now has enough votes to pass the bill. (The House already had enough votes.) It now appears that Washington's lawmakers wi
