Pope Benedict’s four-day visit to England and Scotland kicked off today, and with the exception of the island’s excited Catholics and a warm welcome from British Prime Minister David Cameron and Queen Elizabeth, public sentiment apparently ranges from angry to apathetic.

In other words, not so easy to boil this down to a punchy headline! It gets even more complicated when you go beyond the clergy abuse protests, grumpy secularists and atheist publicity stunts, into the controversies over the cost of the pope’s security requirements, the inflammatory remarks about Great Britain made by one of his advisers and tension over the beatification of Church of England figure John Henry Newman (making him one step away from Catholic sainthood) on Saturday.
