More bad news for the Catholic Church in Europe: Admitting to having sexually abused a young boy about 25 years ago, Roger Vangheluwe, 73, has resigned from his position as Belgium’s longest-serving bishop. The Associated Press and Catholic News Agency have the story.

The scandalous news came a day after Pope Benedict accepted the resignation of Irish Bishop Jim Moriarty, who has not been accused of abusing children, but admits he should have “challenged the prevailing culture” that protected pedophile priests for decades. Moriarty is the third bishop to resign recently in Ireland; two others have offered their resignations, but the Vatican has not announced any decisions yet.

In Germany, Bishop Walter Mixa has offered his resignation, after admitting he physically abused children while a parish priest decades ago. Mixa is also accused of financial misconduct. The Vatican has not announced a decision yet in that case.
