Becoming Great

The Last of the Mohicans (Saving the best for last)

There’s something inherent to almost every human being and the concept of the time table.  We’ve all been guilty of it at some point or another. We believe that we should be at a certain place or accomplished a goal by a certain age.  One of the biggest breakthrough’s for me, and I share this with my clients is the principle of not being wed to an outcome.  What happens is we get caught up in the how vs. getting what we want.  God is never on our time.  The sooner we embrace this, the better off we will be.

I know it can seem like you’re the last of the Mohicans, but it could be that God is saving the best for last. Here’s a quick story.  A man lived his life right and struggled through most of his life.  He suffered many ailments and financially it seemed as if he could not catch a break. He often felt behind many of his peers who had all he wanted– a family, home and success.  He met a friend in church who was recently born again and wanted to turn his life around.  They became friends and while the man continued to live right, his friend still did what he did before he sought a life change (engaging in drinking, promiscuity, drugs). The friend eventually meets the woman of his dreams and they lived happily ever after.  The man was so confused.  He asked God “Lord why?” He went to sleep. In his dream, God spoke to him and showed him two walls.  One wall was black with a white circle.  The other wall was white with a black circle.  God told the man ” that black wall represents your friend.  He loves me, but is dealing with a lot of darkness.  The white wall is you. You do your best to live by my precepts, but there are some things that we still need to work on. But, here’s what you need to know; I love both walls the same.”

The man understood and continued to live right.  He eventually met the woman of his dreams and now lives a financially prosperous life.  He’s in his forties and healthy and able to enjoy the abundant life he’s been blessed with.  God saved the best for last. What’s the moral of the story? Stay doing what you know to be right and eventually you will reap. Not when you’d like but you have to trust you will.

Remember we have the ability to not only change our world, but the world as a whole….BE GREAT!!

There’s a relationship with everything in life.

I have a client who is really a great a person with so much to give and offer the world. However, although he has achieved success the thing he truly desires always seems to escape him.  As a result he has become self destructive in relationships.  The thing that he fails to see is that everything works together if we truly want to have the abundant life.  We often think that one has nothing to do with the other, but that is false.  If you mistreat those who love you now how can you expect to treat the one whom you want to spend your life with?

Every relationship builds upon another.  Therefore, how we treat our friends is closely related to how we  will treat our significant other.  In order to experience greater in life, we must be greater.  Moreover, to get that new thing we deeply desire, we must ourselves be new and different.  My client is now understanding that everything matters.  There’s a relationship with everything in life.  We only grow in the context of relationships so we must truly value and appreciate them.  Our success and failures our related to our associations.  Let us not be cavalier with those things that matter most in life.embracing pic

Examine your relationships.  If you sense disorder do your part in mending and maintaining. If we want to have the things we want most in life, we must do good by what we have that’s present in our lives.

Remember we have the ability to not only change our world, but the world as a whole….BE GREAT!!

Be Legendary

posted by Pervis Taylor, III

My tagline for everything I do is ‘Be Great’.  It originated from my mother telling me on a daily basis that I was destined for greatness.  For me greatness is the pinnacle of life. However, I want to add to that tagline and mindset  I recently was speaking to a group of young men and I was explaining the power of living by principle. I showed them a Michael Jordan commercial.  I wanted them to see if they could assess what was the principle he lived by.  At the end of the commercial the words: BE LEGENDARY were strewn across the screen.tk show

Fast forward I was speaking to a group of adults and a young man asked me what I thought his mindset should be towards his dream of being an etiquette coach.  I said simply, be legendary.  No matter what you do in life whether you are a janitor, teacher, basket weaver, blogger, home maker, actor etc, have the mindset that you are going to be the best to ever do it.  Take pride in whatever you do in life.  Excellence leaves a mark and creates history. You are a history maker!!

Don’t begrudge where you find yourself in life. If you are a student, be the student that changes the game.  If you are a husband be the husband that becomes the template or the standard by which all husbands need to abide by. Everything matters. Greatness resides in you. You have the makings that which legends are made of.

Remember we have the ability to not only change our world, but the world as a whole….BE GREAT!!

Humanity

man-looking-in-mirrorOne of the biggest hurts in the human experience is when we get hurt by someone very close to us.  To add onto the pain, the person is oblivious to the infraction and/or is not interested in mending the hurt.  The gravity of the issue can render a person broken to the core.  How do we deal with the situations? Do we hate the person forever? Do we excuse the behavior? Do we allow ourselves to grow bitter?

The biggest breakthrough in your life will occur the moment you realize that a person is a human being before they whoever they are to you.  Being human is an interesting thing.  We are so complex yet simple at the same time. We do things which to us make perfect sense, but can be harmful or offensive to others. While I know this won’t change everything it does help you embrace forgiveness faster.  Think about a time you’ve been misunderstood, and wanted to be forgiven.

Now try to place to take that feeling and perspective and apply it to the person who has hurt you.  Again, I’m not saying this is going to be easy, but it’s a powerful step forward for you.  We if anything, are perfectly human.  We are flawed, broken and yet loveable at the same time.  What a wonder God has made in us.

Remember we have the ability to not only change our world, but the world as a whole….BE GREAT!!

Dr. A.R. Bernard said it best, "Our words create our world".  Our words are very powerful.  It is through words that bonds are made. It is through words that hearts have been broken. Words are energy.  Often we don't realize that we have words that we communicate to ourselves unknowingly.  This
