There’s a 4 letter word that others have called you many times.

Not only that but you’ve also called yourself this same 4 letter word many times.

The word I’m referring to is “lazy.”

I’ll put it more eloquently and use the word “procrastination” instead.

How many times have you set out to do something that you felt was important only to find yourself either not knowing where to begin or not starting it at all?

Or perhaps you did start doing it and then got distracted by something else and went off and did that other thing instead…

And then afterwards felt guilty about it.

Even though you felt that you had to do that important thing, for some reason you ended up spending time on something else and the next thing you knew hours flew by and it seemed like only a few minutes…

But the one thing that still remains is that what you set out to do originally still didn’t get done, even though it was something that you know you “had” to do.

What this all comes down to is procrastinating and if not dealt with your life will be ruled by it.

Here’s an example of what I mean by this.

Do you want to be financially free? I’m sure that your answer is yes. If it is, then my question to you is “are you financially free right now or currently on track to be financially free?”

If you’re not then chances are you aren’t saving any money. If you’re not saving money, what are the reasons that you aren’t? Is it because you go out and buy things instead of saving ? Or is it because something else came up instead?

Perhaps your answer may be that you’re not making enough and that your bills are more than you make. Even if that’s the case it still comes down to putting a value on saving money.

No matter how you look at this, you’ll see that it has to do with procrastinating when it comes to saving money.

And this can be true in any other area of your life as well. Whatever it is for you, the fact is that procrastinating will run your life until you know how to deal with it.

So with that being said, here’s the truth about procrastination and how to overcome it.

This may come as a very big surprise to you…

The reason why people procrastinate is because whatever it is that they’re “putting off” is something that is not important or as important to them as they think…even if they swear that it is.

Take a look at situations where you’ve procrastinated. Was it something you found yourself saying, “I have to do”, “I’m supposed to do”, “I’ve got to do” …

Or was it something that you said, “I love doing”, “I’m inspired to be doing”, “This is what I’ve always dreamed of doing?”

I’m sure the answer it quite obvious.

I can certainly relate to this as well.

When it comes to doing computer tech work, I used to find myself hesitating and procrastinating and using the “should’s”, “got to’s”, and “have to’s” until I figured out how to overcome it…and I’ll be sharing that with you in a few minutes.

Before I get to that, there’s another important part of why you procrastinate that I want to bring up.

This involves when you procrastinate because you’re either unsure of the “how to” and/or you’re overwhelmed. You do have some options in these types of situations.

The first is that you can delegate the tasks to others that you don’t want to do. If you’re not able to do that, then you can either take the time to learn how to accomplish it on your own or you can get a mentor or coach to help you out.

Quite often when I bring this up, people will say, “I can’t afford to delegate it out or hire a coach.”

This leads most people to either learn it on their own or they give up. In many of these cases there’s procrastination that precedes it.

Now here’s what this is all leading up to and is the sure fire cure to overcome procrastination.

When you’re doing something this is high on your values or that which is most important to you, you’ll do whatever it takes, travel any distance, and pay whatever price to accomplish it.

If it’s not important you’ll procrastinate, hesitate, and quite possibly give up.

The bottom line is that when you have a big enough “why” and see how the thing you procrastinate and hesitate doing helps you in whatever it is that’s most important to you, you’ll do whatever it takes to accomplish it.

If you procrastinate and hesitate when it comes to keeping your house, and I offer to pay you $10 million if you cleaned your house within the next 3 days–if having that $10 million is important to you, you’ll clean your house.

If you procrastinate when it comes to losing 20 lbs…if I offer to pay you $5 million to lose that 20 lbs within the next two months, would you do it. You would if having that money is important enough to you.

In fact it doesn’t have to be money, it can be anything that is most important to you.

See where I’m going with this?

Now this bring us back to what I promised you earlier about what I figured out in how to overcome procrastination.

When you find yourself procrastinating and not wanting to do something ask yourself this question:

“How will doing (whatever it is I’m procrastinating over) help me accomplish what’s most important to me (my goals)?”

And come up with no less than 30 answers.

When you’re able to see that the things you don’t want to do (but are involved in what you want to accomplish) can actually help you accomplish your goals, you won’t procrastinate or hesitate and you’ll be more inspired in getting them done.

This is the sure fire cure to overcome procrastination.

I mentioned the word “lazy” at the beginning. There’s no such thing as a lazy person. If you’re doing something you don’t want to do, someone else who loves doing that may call you “lazy.” But that’s not true.

What you are is a special person with a tremendous amount of value to offer the world.

Your ability to realize that and use it goes a long way in helping you to help others so they can help you in return.
