All the blustering over Iran and the bomb encourages Americans to think that Iran’s getting nuclear weapons is a disaster for the United States.

The argument is not just wrong, it is stupidly wrong.

First, there already is an Islamic Bomb, if you must use that terminology. Pakistan has nuclear weapons. In addition, Osama Bin Laden is almost certainly in Pakistan, has been for a long time, and the Pakistani government, our “ally,” has made no effort to get him.

In addition, Pakistan ‘s government is a dictatorship far less democratic than even Iran’s, and if it falls, it may well be replaced by a strongly Islamic government of some sort filled with the idiotic confidence that comes to those who suddenly have power and think they are doing God’s work. We know the type well in this country.

Bush and the other war criminals, monsters, thugs, and NeoConservatioes – excuse me, but I repeat myself – are unconcerned with Pakistan, our ally. They know that an Islamic Bomb is no threat to our country. If they thought otherwise please explain to me their easy going response to Pakistan’s bomb.

Iran’s regime is nothing to admire, but it is the most democratic regime Iran has had since the US helped overthrow the democratically elected Mossadegh government and installed the Shaw’s murderous tyranny. Further, like Christian theocracies, Iran has rapidly become corrupt as Mullahs indulge themselves in the perks of power. Such people do not run risks. They will not put their comfort at stake in order to attack the US.

For decades we lived minutes away from a Soviet strike that would annihilate us. Why didn’t they? One major reason is that we would do the same to them. Nothing has changed in that calculus with Iran except that, even with a bomb, they cannot annihilate us. They have no air force of note, no intercontinental missiles, no navy, and no industrial base to challenge us. They are a regional power, and have no prospect of ever becoming more than that.

The reasons for the criminal conspiracy against Iran have nothing to do with nuclear weapons.
