OUR SQUADRON in Vietnam was experiencing a shortage of air-crew personnel, which meant each of us had to fly extra missions. The general held a briefing and then opened the floor to questions. “Sir,” one flier asked, “when will the pilot-navigator undermanning problem be relieved?” “Captain,” replied the general curtly, “there is no shortage of personnel in theater.” “Let me rephrase my question,” the captain said. “Sir, what are we planning to do with our excess airplanes?”
