Last weekend I got a haircut. Normally this isn’t a big event but this time I had ten inches of my hair cut off for Locks of Love.  I started growing my hair out over a year ago for my wedding and after the wedding I kept growing it with the intention of donating it.

In order to donate, I had to have ten inches of hair cut off in a ponytail. When I went to the salon it was pretty easy, I told my stylist that I wanted to donate my hair, she put my hair in a ponytail, cut it and that was it.  I didn’t have to go to a special salon, I just read the requirements on the website so I knew how it needed to be done. I put the ponytail in a padded envelope, printed out a donor form from the Locks of Love website and mailed it in.

Locks of Love is a nonprofit organization that donates hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under 18 who have any medical condition that results in long term hair loss. Any donated hair has to be at least 10 inches long to make a hairpiece and it can take 6-8 ponytails to make just one hairpiece.

The haircut was a big change, but I like my new hairstyle and it feels good to know that a child somewhere will benefit and all I had to do was cut my hair!
