Bible passage: Jeremiah 32:36-37
Written: sometime from 626 to about 586 BC and prophecied that the Jews would survive Babylonian rule and return home. Fulfilled: 536 BC (remember in BC time, 536 is AFTER 586) In Jeremiah 32:36-37, the prophet said that the Jews would survive their captivity in Babylon and return home. Both parts of this prophecy were fulfilled. Many Jews had been taken as captives to Babylon beginning around 605 BC. But, in 538 BC, they were released from captivity and many eventually returned to their homeland.
Here is Jeremiah 32:36-37
"You are saying about this city, `By the sword, famine and plague it will be handed over to the king of Babylon'; but this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: I will surely gather them from all the lands where I banish them in my furious anger and great wrath; I will bring them back to this place and let them live in safety.

But a videotape is linear, and when replayed, will always come out the same. A person with free will will not always make the same decisions.

Besides, that works under the assumption that there's only one timeline without multiple possible futures, only one. And from where I stand, that would deny the existence of free will.

Again. I challenge anyone to provide an example of a biblical prophecy being fulfilled. (An event that occured outside the bible, that is.)

My human perception: Think of God, the Aplha & Omega, as being able to view a video tape of all that has and will happen. He has set the laws of nature into motion. He has allowed us the free will to make our own choices. He knows what our prayers will be & answers them (another topic). He simply is not bound by time (as we know it) or space. He knows "how the movie ends" & can therefore tell us what will happen. The prophecies of the Old Testament fulfilled in the New Testament serve to encourage our faith. As the father is quoted in Mark 9:24, I do believe; help my unbelief.

I am not an atheist. I believe in God as Moses interpreted Him at Sinai. (aka Judaism). I have been told by various Christians that I am to be redeemed, others claim I am going to hell. Still others have told me that my people are a parasite on society. All of these people point to the Bible for backup. Which interpretation?
I believe the bible is not a detailed road map with literal answers about the future like what I will eat tomorrow.
The flood was not literally a flood. (Consider the logistics of housing two of every organism in an ark.) It is a metaphor. Perhaps for mass extinctions, perhaps for environmental neglect, I don't know. But with such an ambiguous book it takes a considerable amount of arrogance to claim that Race X or Y is evil, or that I will have scrambled eggs tomorrow. We just don't know.
It does hold alot of answers in a non-literal way. It provided a history written so that the slaves at Sinai could understand it. Its stories reveal truth of another sort. A common cultural wisdom.

This unbeliever would like an example where a biblical prophecy has been fulfilled.

I make no attempt to "rationalize" away the clear meaning of scripture, in fact I attempt to make sure it is taken in context, but in my constant search for truth, I am not perfect and do make mistakes.

If you think that Christian beliefs keep people from understanding the world around them, you are mistaken. God has made it plain that the world around us reveals His very nature in its science and physical laws, which are in themselves "fascinating".

Whether Nostradamus had revelations of the future that were real or not is debatable until the end of time. Whether they were from God or not is also debatable. What is not debatable is God's inerrant prophecy.

What I said was all "days of the Lord" mentioned in the Bible are NOT the second coming and the end of the world.

Furthermore, no one can understand the nature of God. I gave an example in an attempt to help someone understand how God might see the future because He isn't bound by time, yet created the physical universe.

Prophecy is real. There is a way to test for it -- its 100% accuracy in being fulfilled, which those Biblical prophecies that have been fulfilled have met. Not all Biblical prophecy has been fulfilled yet, else we wouldn't be discussing it here and now on PCs.

I didn't say there wasn't going to be a second coming of Christ in which ALL would see Him. Since the dead will be raised also, it is apparent the high priests will also see Him. "This generation" while typically a period of around 40 years, also sometimes means the generation of the earth's existence and not a definite period.

The disciples clearly misunderstood Jesus concerning His second advent and the Kingdom of God as many do today.

That is the essential factor in religion, that no matter what, you can petition God(s)with prayerfor those of other faiths and religions, when in fact, you cannot petition God with prayer. God must act independently without human influence, or he is not God. All that ever matters is that you believe in whatever God or religion you embrace or face the notion that death is the end of the cycle of life which goes round and round.

Interesting questions and replies all. The interesting point missed IMO, is that you cannot foretell the future any more than you can change the past. The statement "Those who forget the past are doomed to relive it" is a much better indicator of future events as man would have it while natural events are never predicted. One could have studied Hitler and said there would be war and have been close to predicting it. You live in California, you can predict earthquakes...it doesn't take much, just the timing. In short, there is a God, but who said that God has a plan, makes a plan or cares?

Oren,
Who are you to judge anyone's faith? The truth is you or anyone else will never know, until we are no longer here. Then what will it matter than? Peace be with you all.
