Well, let's see: The life of Christ is hidden under the story of Cool Hand Luke, Moby
Dick got to me, Hombre has a hidden story, Dances With Wolves, The Shootist,
and last but not least, Tombstone.
Takes all kinds, doesn't it.

i cannot beleive no one mentioned "stigmata". That has to be one of the best. I know it does not portray the catholic church in the best of lights, but you need to look beyond that. Look beyond all the bells and whistles of organized religion of any denomination.. It is there, you will find God. He is in the simple things. He always was. :O)

Koyaanisqatsi. Powaqquatsi. No words, Just people. And a musical score that fits this rollercoaster of imagery. ..I don't think they play any where on a large screen but do not ride either one out unless you can be 100% undisturbed. Like film-sized meditations. Magnolia was trying to do the same thing, I feel.

Would anyone understand if I said that the movie "Groundhog Day" moved me spiritually? The story of a man being stuck in the same day to live over and over again, until he gets it "right" is the essence of what we all are trying to accomplish in our lifetime. The main character of the movie, played by Bill Murray, lives this one day in every way conceivable-from being reckless, rude, impatient, and uncaring towards others.
He is finally "released" when he realizes that the only way to live life is to be loving and giving toward others.

Phoenix714:
Thanks for mentioning Ground Hog Day. I have been so intrigued by that plot wherever I found it, and interestingly enough, it keeps popping up.
The X Files episode that dealt with Mulder trying to stop the bank robber from blowing everybody away.
A Star Trek TNG episode (Picard era) that dealt with the ship going through the same time loop over and over.
There is something that grabs me about that basic scenario, almost as though I know exactly what that's like . . .
