Do you believe the story of the great flood and Noah's ark actually occured, or is it a fable designed to teach a lesson?
If it actually occured, does that prove that God is flawed and makes mistakes?

It's an interesting question. Most every ancient creation myth that I know of has a flood story.

Is the story of Noah’s Ark true or mythological? The answer, I think, is yes!

There is no doubt a real basis for the ark story. There are many stories from the Mesopotamian area of a farmer who survived a flood with his animals by building a boat - Noah, Gilgamesh are the more famous ones.

That said, it is important to understand what the theological meaning is for Catholics. It isn't that "God erred" - the cleansing aspect of the Genesis variant of the flood tale prefigures Baptism for us - God washing our sins away and starting over.

Nature finds ways to clean and purge that seem violent to us. In a sense there is a certain Baptismal violence too - dying to self, and rebirth in Christ is a drama played out at Golgotha and the Tomb.

But it is the radical nature of baptism that the story prefigures for us - baptism is like destroying a whole world, and then rebuilding a gleaming new one in its place, washed clean of its stains.

Why has He not cleansed the world since?
