Hello,

I am new to the Bible, but I have become very interested in Mary Magdalene. I find nowhere in the Bible the actual mention of this woman being a prostitute. Nor is there any evidence that she was the one who annointed the Lord's feet. In my readings of the new testiment she seems to be one of his most devoted deciples and most favoured by Jesus Christ. He did appear to her first after his resurrection and it was her He instructed to tell the Good News to the "12". So where do Christians get the idea that she was a prostitute and this great sinner?
Thank you for your time.

I don't know about the other stuff, but I do know she had seven demons driven out of her so she wasn't always good and saintly. She was a sinner saved by grace like the rest of us...:<)

You are absolutely correct that there is not one piece of Biblical evidence for the idea that MM was a prostitute. It was Pope Gregory, back in AD 600 or so, who said that the "sinner" who washed Jesus feet with her hair was MM, though there is no textual reason for coming to this conclusion.

My theory: The church in that period (and since?) didn't know how to deal with women unless they could be made into asexual ascetics, like Mary, or "fallen" women, such as MM.

There is some evidence that Mary of Magdala was a wealthy woman who helped support Jesus and the other disciples. Some biblical scholars believe that Mary was the "favorite" disciple of Jesus, whose identity is never revealed.

She was most likely not a prostitute, but was easily portrayed as such by a male leaders of the early church. They thought she was independent, unmarried, and seemed to have financial resources...so of course, she must have been a harlot. Supposedly she also had a child, which was proof that she must have been sleeping around, right? After all, you can't have TWO virgin Mary's.

Unfortunately, we may never know who Mary Magadlene really was, but increasingly it seems there is evidence that she was not what the early Church would like us to believe.
