Hello,
While most people have been led to believe that there are three main branches of Christianity, I have to interject and say that, in actuality, there are four. Oriental Orthodoxy is yet another branch -- and it has been either persecuted or neglected by the rest of Christendom for the past 1500 years. They have many denominations underneath its branch: Coptic Orthodox, Ethiopian Orthodox, Armenian Apostolic. The main difference between Oriental Orthodoxy and the rest of established Christianity is that the Oriental Orthodox are miaphysite (one composite nature of Christ both wholly human and divine); and the rest of Christianity is Melkite (two natures of Christ both of which are wholly human and divine united in one person. The Oriental Orthodox are not, as commonly accused, monophysite.
I would just like to know if anyone is Oriental Orthodox or knows someone who is such.

There is a young Egyptian fellow, attending a local university's medical school, who has started coming to my parish, which is Greek. He was born in Egypt, but his family moved to Tennessee when he was quite young. Though he cannot commune with us, he joins us for liturgy and fellowship, as there is no Coptic (or other Oriental Orthodox) Church nearby. He has been a powerful witness for me, as a young person in such a secular culture, to more openly live my faith.

The Coptic Church in my area has grown so much that it is building a gorgeous new church building. My little Greek parish is considering buying their old place.

We have a coptic couple that attend our OCA parish each Sunday. They've been given special permission from their bishop and special permission from our bishop to commune with us, as there are no Coptic churches within a 300 mile radius of here.
Orthodox Steve, perhaps your Egyptian-born friend could seek out this same kind of special permission, so that he won't have to live without the sacraments. To my knowledge, this kind of special-permission-communion is on the rise and is starting to be encouraged. On a real grass roots level, I don't think most Oriental Orthodox or Eastern Orthodox see much difference between themselves. (At least none of the Copts I've met seem to think there is any). Of all the things that make me think that we will re-establish communion with them soon , this is by far the most convincing. Here on the West coast, the stories of these special-permission-communions are all over the place because of the lack of Coptic churches. This kind of grass roots acceptance of inter-communion makes me think the time for real unity to be recognized is at hand.
Masha, our little mission would just LOVE to have our own worship space/building right now. It sounds like an opportunity that shouldn't be passed up.
Blessings,
Johanna
