I know an atheist who got married to a woman that later recognized her addiction to alcohol and joined AA. Prior to this, she was not especially spriritual either, but now she is embracing God in her recovery. This is changing the dynamic in their relationship and he is looking for advice in dealing with the issue.

Has anyone else out there experienced something like this? How did you work through it? I will be giving that person a link to this discussion. I don't know if he'll read it or not, but any advice would be appreciated.

God is what's called "A quick fix"

If you think someone out there will solve the problem for you then you really don't have to. It is deffinatlly easier to go to god, but you wont get anything back from it. The only way she'll over come her problems is to face them head on and realize them for what they are.

Aeuzent ... the question was ...

You being young, I can possible, maybe (?), understand your answer. But how does this help with the questions above. There was no talk about her inability to face her problems! It sounds like that’s what she did. Faced her dilemma by going to AA. It appears that now she is living a sober life and attributes her success to a God of her understanding. Insulting her beliefs by imposing your bias will, in no way that I can see, help to repair a relationship as expressed above. Maybe another approach could be to look at how an Atheist deals with a spouse who was once Atheist, but who now believes in God. Is the clash of egos too great in this situation making the differences in their beliefs irreconcilable?

Hey Doohickie
I'm not an Atheist but it seems to me that the women I'm with, is now and always will be the same person I married, even during the difficult times. However, she no longer believes as she once did, nor do I. We’ve changed! Everything in life is also changing and is in flux, hopefully for the better! We need to change as well, and adjust to daily circumstances, some big and some small. Relationships, especially, need to continually change just to keep up. Easier said than done, but make the best of it. Maybe with a new found belief system, she'll be even more caring, loving, generous and much more. If we are to judge another, maybe it would be prudent to wait and see what we are judging. Give it time! I wonder – does your friend need someone to believe exactly as he does? If so, he might be too shallow for any lasting relationship in the first place and this just might be his endurance test.
for what it's worth,
