I saw that someone was getting help regarding a surname so I thought I'd give it a shot to. I can't seem to figure out if my name comes from English or Swedish. It is Asby. I've ready that it MAY come from Askeby. If so, I believe that "ask" means ash in Swedish (though I'm not sure if it is the tree or cinders). Thanks for any help!

It is probably Swedish, as there is an affix meaning "-town" in Scandinavian languages, which I think is -by everywhere. So, your ancestors of name would be from some town called Asby. It could too be an altered form of Askeby, but I don't know. On the Ásatrú board there are several Scandinavians I believe and they could probably tell you alot more.

Hey great, thanks.
I know that there are several towns called Asby in Sweden but there is also towns (a parish?) in England known as Great Asby, Little Asby, and something else similar.
But I'll go ask the Skandanavian folks, thanks.

In doing geneaology I found that My line (most likely) comes from Ashby which comes from England. Does anyone know if the Ashbys and Asbys of U.K. were originally from Sweden? A Swedish etymology makes the most sense.

Oh and apparently Asby comes from "town located at a grove of ash trees" in Swedish.
