Well, the general consensus is that this is a work of fiction. What are your own personal views on it? I haven't really been interested in the history behind it, but i was at Borders today and saw some interesting books on it. Do you think it is an absolute work of fiction? Can some of the things in it actually work? What about the Necronomicon Spellbook? Is that also fictional? Some people take a different view on the Necronomicon, saying that the Elder Gods, etc. ARE real beings, b/c even if it is a fictional book or fictional mythos, ALL religions at some point must have created a conception of the Divine or supernatural, so in that sense, the Necronomicon is valid. They are merely new ways that we conceive of the Divine. What are your views on this? I find that view very fascinating, and it's something i've been thinking about for awhile.

I'd say it's something so many people believe in that it works. I know that the rites from there were used successfully, and a copy of the book masqueraded itself effectively as a Communist brochure in my home. ("Now where's that thing?" "What about that?" "I thought so too, I looked at it a minute ago, it's a Commie brochure." *taking book off-shelf* "No, it isn't." "Huh?") Like any magical system that's been fed sufficiently.

Borders? < perk! > Thanks for hanging out at a store in the chain for which I work. I hope you spent lots and lots! < g >

I think there's merit to the idea that a magickal system could be built upon the Necronomicon, fictional though it is.

Some years ago, I knew a guy who was experimenting with developing rituals based upon it. He claimed they worked about as well as "real" ones devised by such luminaries as Crowley.

I myslef have read the book many times. In a strange way I found the book to be very entertaining and someday i hope to make a movie about it...but back on topic I do beleive that many of the spells and rituals, if done properly, would in fact work. Though I also beleive that the Necronomicon holds some powerful magick based on some sort of psycological magick system and it can be dangerous for the ill experianced. Also, the book itself has no succefully working banshiment spells. The editor made a note of this saying that after some experimenting with a few rituals he and his crew discovered that that all the banishments within the Necronomicon do not work and suggested using a banishment from a more solar dominated religion like Christianity or Judiasm.

As for the book itself I beleive its part fiction part non-fiction. Its up to the reader I suppose.
