Once when I went to Hawai'i on business, I became very sick before I arrived. After a good night's sleep, I felt better, except for a splitting headache that I couldn't get rid of. Early the next morning, knowing that I only had a couple of hours before my meeting, I went out to walk along the beach to try to clear my head.
I found an open concession stand and decided to buy a cup of coffee. As the worker filled my order, I couldn't help but notice an old man standing near me. He was wiry and thin with longish hair, and looked like he might have been native Hawaiian. You could also smell the alcohol on his breath. "Go on! Get away from here, Old Man!" scolded the owners of the stand. It was clear they thought his presence wouldn't help business.
But instead he came straight over and looked, really looked, at me. "You're not feeling well, are you?" he asked. I admitted I wasn't.
Ignoring the stricken looks of the concessionaires, he came behind me and put his hands on my shoulders and did--something. My pain vanished immediately.
Wow. I thanked him and tried to buy him something to eat, but he just shook his head and smiled.
Whoever he was, he completely saved my day and my trip, just by looking past himself and being willing to help a total stranger. He was perhaps my most unexpected Hometown Hero.

Where should I start? My heroe is my Aunt Lynne. She has ALWAYS been there for me even if it wasn't in her best interest. When I was 17, I got pregnant. Not only did I get pregnant but it was by a black guy. You have to understand how prejudice my family was. My mother would call me all kinds of bad names. Who was there to pick up the pieces? My aunt. She took me to every doctor's appointment. She was there when I had her. I was supposed to give her up for adoption, but at the last minute my mom stepped in and called the lady and told her WE had changed OUR minds. Well, 10 years later I had a son with the person who is now my husband. 1 year later I had another son. Then at the 4th most important time in my life, as always, she was there again. She helped me with my wedding. Not only did she help, she planned, paid for, and did things the mother of the bride was supposed to do. Recently I found out that she went throught a very traumatic situation during her childhood. I only hope and pray that she knows I'm there for her the way she has always been there for me. She's my heroe. Now it's time she be rewarded for that. Not only does she do things for me. She does things for everyone. Recently my step-grandfather died. She picked out the house where my grandmother moved. They are so close now. Closer than ever. They use to only see each other at family things now they see each other every day and go to church together. One day I hope she realizes how much she has blessed others, then she will realize how much she has been blessed. Sincerely, Dana

Dana, thank you for your kind words. But it's easy to be helpful to some people like you. Also i think God has put us together on this earth to help each other. I thank God every day for his mercy and grace that I am able to be of some to Him and anyone else he directs me to.
God bless you and your family
Aunt Lynne
