Hi. I may have the opportunity to take a babysitting job between now and the end of the summer (a sweet 5-year-old girl and, during the summer, her two siblings). The job seems perfect in many ways...the Dad goes to my church, they live nearby, I should be able to take my 11-year-old son (who I am homeschooling) with me, and they may still need some babysitting during the school year (Teacher Workdays, etc.). My problem is that my kids and I get Medicaid and food stamps and I'm worried that, if I take what is basically a summer job, Human Services will want to count that income as if it would remain at that level for 12 months of the year rather than spreading it out over the year. (If I am counted as making more than $400 or so/month, I might lose my Medicaid, which I really need because I have some chronic health problems.) I was hoping I could get some insight about whether or not things will work out okay (with medical insurance, mostly) if I take this job. Also, there is the possibility of me just getting paid "off the books," but that would be my Plan B, not my Plan A. Thank you for any insight you can offer me.
Blessings, Karen

Go with plan B. Unfortunately government programs do not come with any wiggle room for aiding the recipient to get on their own feet. There design is to stifle any growth.

God bless, J

Please don't do anything to place your government assistance or Medicaid in jeopardy.

It's not a good idea to go with plan B either or discuss such options in an open forum like this.

Before accepting any money, find out what you can and cannot do as far as your government assistance goes. Find out in advance how any extra money earned will be treated.

Research first, decision second. That'll help you avoid any devastating financial problems.

I feel sticking to your limited budget and being creative will sustain you.

I hope you won't mind a suggestion about decision making. Try to take a step back and look at the pros and cons of a decision you might make. If the cons or potential cons out weigh the benefits, then don't go ahead.

Sending lots of healing to you and your family.

Dear Spiritalk, Thank you for your insights. I actually have known of government programs that are supposed to help you get on your feet, but the red tape can be ridiculous. A friend of mine who is blind started her own business while on SSI or disability, and they refused to deduct business-related expenses from her income and claimed that she owed them money. Then, after she got a job doing medical transcription work on a special computer at home, they kept sending her money. When she sent it back to them, they counted it as her "paying them back" part of what she "owed" them, but said that she still owed them some more! Now, she just laughs about it and says that she would never go on that particular program again. Thanks again and Blessings, Karen
