So, we knew the man didn't quite grasp the meaning of "polity" when he decided to tell us how to talk.

Seems like "Creedless" is giving him some trouble now, too.

Yes, almost all UUs probably believe in feeding the homeless. But yakking on about our shared moral values is just not in the man's job description.

Well, we probably do share many moral values.

But they shouldn't be expressed by a series of statements that start out with out "We believe..." and then proceed through a laundry list of applied political policies.

If I were Sinkford's defense attorney, I would answer his charges in the following manner:

1. Rev. Sinkford was not prescribing moral values for the Unitarian community. He was describing the commonly held moral beliefs of the UU community. In fact, it would be impossible for him to prescribe mopral values for the community, since the position of moderator is an adminsitrative one and carries no theological authority. (This last response is problemetized by his claim that he "leads" the UU community.)

2. More problematic is Smc's charge that the Rev is extrapolating "shared morals" into a "political agenda."
Actually, I don' read Sinkford as saying this. He is saying that support for the political agenda IS a moral value. (By extension, of course, opposing this agenda can be seen as immoral, or, at best, morally neutral.)

This is unwise, of course, but it isn't the same thing as promoting a creed. For the to be the case, he would have to be saying that you MUST support this viewpoint or you AREN'T a UU. He isn't saying that. He is saying that you MUST support this poltical viewpoint or you are an IMMORAL UU.
