What Are Therapists Thinking When You're Talking to Them?
How to you feel about that?
Therapists are not trying to be objective. They try to understand your experience by actually thinking and feeling what you think and feel. “Competent therapists must be able to be so engaged and connected that they can feel what it is like to be you,” explains Dr. Permut. “This means that they are not just listening to what you are saying, but noticing what thoughts, feelings, and sensations they themselves experience when they spend time with you in the counseling session.”
