How should we handle criticism?
There are three critical steps to handling criticism:
Listen: Don’t resist, rebut, or flat out reject it. Show that you have the emotional maturity to listen to something “negative” about yourself. This will allow you to develop humility and a reputation as a person of wisdom and objectivity.
Look: Even if you feel it is unjustified, look for the kernel of truth in what the person is saying. Yes, truth can sometime be painful but it will set you free.
Learn: Ask the person how he would handle the situation and be willing to learn new ways of behaving.
Leave: You don’t have to embrace all that is said. People often have manipulative or ulterior motives. Determine how much of the input you really desire to implement and leave the rest behind.
