Many of us in the Boomer generation spent decades running our careers and lives by pumping massive doses of Adrenalin through our systems. Because there were so many of us competing for places in the best schools and jobs, and wanting the same for our children, most of us became habituated to stress. It feels natural and even organic—but that doesn’t mean it’s good for us. Chances are that you are at an age and stage in your life when at least some if not all of the old stress-instigators have long been resolved, but you are still stuck in fight or flight mode. Next time you’re feeling anxious, give yourself a long time out to explore possible causes. If you don’t come up with anything much—or the options are diffuse or confused—consider the possibility that your non-productive anxiety is a bad habit that you are finally ready to drop.
