Bless This Mess

If cleanliness is next to godliness,
this house is in another zip code.
Divine presence, please bless our dirty home,
for it has been lived in and loved in.
Thank you for every messy inch of it.

For the dust lining the shelves,
crowded with books I have read and loved.
For dishes in the sink that yielded up something yummy.
For the scattering of shoes that prove
my house is full of people I love.
And yes, even for whatever it is the cat hacked up on the sofa.

Thank You for giving us a home to wreck.
And thank You—
oh so fervently—
for making it Your home, too.
