Beginners do have a slight edge in competition. There's lower expectations for the beginner and less stress too. In some cases beginners luck does exist. After all, too much worry can affect performance. If you subscribe to the beginners luck theory, you'll find plenty of instances that substantiate it. You're also more likely to ignore all the times you didn't have luck as a beginner. A little practical technique and a selective memory play a role in this superstition.
