Ho Battles the French
Aligning with the only superpowers who would help him, Ho became a Communist and held onto the northern half of Vietnam. The French occupied the south and asked for American help. In September 1950, the first group of U.S. military advisors arrived. On March 13, 1954, attempting to drive Ho out of the north, the French found themselves surrounded in the valley of Dien Bien Phu. For two months they held out. On May 7, 1954, the French surrendered to Ho – and pulled out of North Vietnam, but defiantly stayed on in the south.
