Six-time Grammy Award-winning Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir will perform during President Barack Obama’s inauguration on Monday. Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), chairman of the 2013 Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies, chose the choir for the event. “I wanted to show off the talent of Brooklyn at the inaugural, so I chose the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir, which has won Grammy awards and is just incredible,” Schumer said. The musical group will perform “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” at the U.S. Capitol for the 57th presidential inauguration ceremony.
Anthea Butler, associate professor of religious studies and Africana studies at the University of Pennsylvania, discusses the President's upcoming second term in office as a monumental moment for black Americans. "It's a moment in which we can say, we haven't come as far as we needed to, but it's a way to say we've come very far in this nation and I think that's an important thing to uplift and add to hold up and be really happy about," Butler said.
