The American Founders believed in the reality of sin. They inherited this realism from the Christian tradition, and understood that it created a dilemma for politics—a paradox of power. On the one hand, we need a government to punish evil and bear the sword. On the other, the very sin that needs restraining can only be restrained by other sinners.
