Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Bob Jones University firmly believes in freedom of speech and freedom of religion -- a tenet of America which we must all work together to uphold and defend. The First Amendment gives Bob Jones University the freedom to create policies and guidelines under which we operate. It gives media the freedom to report. It gives every church in the U.S. -- whether Protestant, Catholic or Muslim -- the freedom to worship. Everyone has the right under the Constitution to believe and practice his faith even when his faith may be out of sync with another's belief. Bob Jones University is a 73-year-old institution grounded in academic excellence and Biblical doctrine. Our impeccable and respected academic credentials are the envy of many in the academic world. Our more than 34,000 graduates are the types of people America needs. Our University firmly believes in freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of America. This is the crux of the issue Bob Jones University faces today. |

QUESTIONS FOR CONSIDERATION BY THOSE WHO WONDER WHY BOB JONES UNIVERSITY HAS BEEN PLACED BY THE MEDIA AND CERTAIN CANDIDATES AT THE CENTER OF THE REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARY DEBATE Primary Campaign
|
- Does Bob Jones University's stand upon the doctrines of Scripture, which places it at odds with papal edict, justly qualify it to be described as "haters of Catholics"? Absolutely not!
- We are, however, under a mandate from the Savior Jesus Christ to "proclaim the Gospel to every creature." This means Catholics, Jews, Buddhists, Mormons, Muslims, Atheists-everybody, including unbelieving and religiously liberal Protestants. Bob Jones University stands opposed to universalism-the religious teaching that all men, regardless of their beliefs, will ultimately arrive in Heaven. Our shame would be in telling people a lie, and thereby letting them go to hell without Christ because we loved their goodwill more than we loved them and their souls.
If there are those who wish to charge us with being anti-Catholicism, we plead guilty. But we are not Catholic-haters. The Christian, scriptural mandate is to present Christ to the world and plead with all men everywhere to look to the Lamb of God, repent of their sins, and trust Him as their sin substitute and His righteousness to give them standing in the sight of God which they cannot have any other way.
All religion, including Catholicism, which teaches that salvation is by religious works or church dogma is false. Religion that makes the words of its leader, be he Pope or other, equal with the Word of God is false. Sola Scriptura.
From the time of the Reformation onward, it has been understood that there is no commonality between the Bible way, which is justification by faith in the shed blood of Jesus Christ, and salvation by works, which the faithful, practicing Catholic embraces.
We love the practicing Catholic and earnestly desire to see him accept the Christ of the Cross, leave the false system that has enslaved his soul, and enjoy the freedom of sins forgiven that is available for any of us in Christ alone.
