CRETE, Ill., Feb. 25 (AP)--The son of Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan is free on bail after turning himself in to face charges he assaulted his pregnant wife.

Louis Farrakhan Jr., 42, was arrested Wednesday after surrendering to face two felony counts of aggravated battery for allegedly striking his wife, Lesil, with a metal serving tray last Friday at their home in Crete, south of Chicago.

Lesil Farrakhan, who is eight months pregnant, suffered a gash to her right temple, authorities said.

Farrakhan was released on $3,000 bond and was scheduled to appear in court on Monday. A judge has ordered him not to contact his wife.

Farrakhan has worked on various Nation of Islam projects but reportedly holds no position in the organization.

Aggravated battery carries a maximum sentence of two to five years in prison.
