“At first,” writes de Blecourt. “you may feel anything but normal. Whenever a new member joins a family, adjustments must be made. Remember to be patient with family members, including yourself. Your new normal may be a matter of time, but you will find it. Don’t hesitate to ask for assistance from your adoption agency and post-adoption support group. Trustworthy family and friends can be a huge help during this time of transition. Be prepared to stay home for most of the first year, to give your child a maximum feeling of security and safety. Your new daily rhythm leads to your new family normal.”
