High School English Teacher at Huffington High School
Amy Gibson has been an English teacher at Huffington High School for 37 years. In 2012 Gibson was awarded the John F. Kennedy Center/Stephen Sondheim Inspirational Teacher Award; in addition she was awarded $10,000. Former student Allie Bolen nominated Gibson for the award. In her essay Bolen, referred to Gibson as a “Victorian woman” who has a strict yet respectful reputation. She goes on to say that Gibson made a life changing impression on her, Gibson is the reason why she has a voice and has become more confident.
Gibson has taught at Catholic schools in Baltimore and in St. Mary’s County. She believes that staying enthusiastic about teaching is the key to being effective. This is not Gibson’s first award; in 2004 she was named the Calvert County Teacher of the Year and has also received honors from the College Board, the University of Maryland Philip Merrill College of Journalism and Yale University.
