What does the LORD require of you
But to do justly,
To love mercy,
And to walk humbly with your God?
Two works of mercy set a man free: forgive and you will be forgiven, and give and you will receive.
Saint Augustine of Hippo
DAILY THOUGHTMercy is the key that sets a prisoner free. It extends grace in place of judgment, forgiveness in place of punishment, and honor in place of disdain. It makes no sense, except to a heart filled with God's unconditional love.
Mercy is a gift God asks you to give to others - not because they deserve it, but because of the mercy God has demonstrated in your own life. Ask God to bring to mind anyone who could use a tender touch of mercy. Depending on how God leads you to bestow this special gift, the one who receives it may never even be fully aware of its extent. But, you will. You'll find that being merciful frees up your own heart to love more authentically.
Lord, thank You for the gift of Your mercy that sets me free. I want to be a person who bestows mercy and unconditional love on other people. Help me not to make quick judgments, but to practice mercy in every area of my life. Amen.
