Wild tarantulas are increasingly rare in the United States, but are gentle and easily tamed as pets. If the handler remains calm and does nothing to alarm the immense spiders, they will not bite -- and appear to enjoy crawling over their owners' hands. In the event of a bite, however, the result is usually a welt about as big as a hornet's sting.
