Being beautiful is not everything, and grandstanding is not Sandra Bullock’s thing. Bullock was voted the world’s most beautiful woman by People Magazine this year. Yet, the 50-year-old star laughed off the title and spoke about the media’s fixation of perfection.

Women shouldn’t be judged on appearances, but their character and Bullock accepted the award to change the perception the actress shared with E! News.

“I laughed when they said they’re going to be generous and bestow me this wonderful privilege, but I said if I can talk about the amazing women that I find beautiful, which are these women who rise above and take care of business and do wonderful things and take care of each other, then I’m more than honored to be on the cover of this.”

She said the media is harming women by focusing on image and age. The Oscar winner also believes that social media and celebrities are negatively impacting women, and men. Bullock has a five-year-old son and she is teaching him to respect women and appreciate them despite disrespectful headlines.

Bullock is hitting back.

“I feel like it’s become open hunting season in how women are attacked, and it’s not because of who we are as people,” she said. “It’s because of how we look or our age.”

Emma Watson is another actress using influence to help women, and free them from prejudices. She has done this by appealing to men to teach their son’s to value women, and not to be driven by the media. Additionally, the Goodwill Ambassador offered that she will allow people to decide who she is, personally or in her career.

“I don’t want other people to decide who I am. I want to decide that for myself. I want to avoid becoming something too styled and too ‘done’ and too generic. You see people as they go through their career and they just become more and more like everyone else.”

Beauty is subtle, which is not Hollywood’s game, and Bullock knows this all too well.

Especially in this town, it's just so hard not to say, 'Oh, I need to look like that,’” she said. "No, be a good person, be a good mom, do a good job with the lunch, let someone cut in front of you who looks like they're in a bigger hurry. The people I find most beautiful are the ones who aren't trying.”
