“What a legacy she left to women — especially to us,” remembers Jane Boomstra, a nurse and 18-year breast cancer survivor.
“She was way ahead of her time as far as having the guts to stand up in public and say, ‘This is what happened to me,’” says Jody MacGready, who described to Thoms how she defeated breast cancer nine years ago. “I think it made a lot of women say, ‘I’m going to go get checked.’ She saved a lot of lives."
