Day 3: The Joy of Weight Loss

Many people believe that they have to make sudden, drastic changes in their life in order to lose weight. I used to think that, too. In my book, "The Joy of Weight Loss," I talk about how I would begin new crash diets and exercise programs, but like most people, abandon them shortly thereafter.

What I learned, and what I now teach people who want to make changes is this: take things slowly, peacefully, and always make it joyous. Stop the "diet and exercise mentality." This is the beginning of a whole new you, it's true, but you have plenty of time, the rest of your life, to do it.

You've spent the first two days finding good things about yourself, and paying attention to and appreciating what you have, instead of what you don't have. I hope you've been enjoying some peaceful, quiet moments with God, and offered yourself and your life in joyous surrender and gratitude. You don't need to do this just once - do it every day, all day, every day, in all ways, always.

TODAY

1. Now, let's put a little joy and gratitude into motion. Go for a 10-minute walk. Walk around the block or up and down your street. If the weather's not so great, walk inside your home or building, or go to a mall or shopping center and walk for 10-minutes without stopping.
2. Take time again to pray and meditate. Offer yourself in surrender to your Creator. You could do this while you walk, making it a "prayer walk." Or do it alone in your sacred space the moment you return.
3. Notice what's beautiful and natural on your walk. See other people, the trees, birds, neighborhood animals, plants and flowers, the sky, clouds. Breathe deeply in and out, and fill your lungs and body with vital life energy. Soak up the sunlight (or moonlight!). Smile at others passing by, or even say "hello."
