Women who undergo a mastectomy (surgical removal of a breast) can’t get breast cancer. You can have a recurrence at the site of the scar, or in the other breast. Because survivors may still have “micrometastatic” cancer cells, smart diet and lifestyle choices are critical. Disease--‐free women who voluntarily have their breasts removed because of an extremely high breast cancer risk still have a 10% chance of getting breast cancer.
