Polarized Health Attitudes

I'm not into working out. My philosophy: No pain, no pain.

Are You a "Well-Being" or an "Eat, Drink, and Be Merry"?

Americans' attitudes about health are becoming progressively more polarized, according to the Natural Marketing Institute (NMI) in Harleysville, Pennsylvania. NMI President Maryellen Molyneaux attributes the shift to concerns about national security, foreign wars, and the economy. She notes that the 2003 data from an annual survey of more than 2,000 U.S. households shows an increase in "'holistic integration' on one side and 'seize the day' on the other."

The NMI is tracking these five attitudes: · Well-Beings: 21 percent of the population (up from 17 percent in 2002) puts health first and seeks it through a wide variety of products, services, and lifestyle choices; · Food Actives: 15 percent of us are dedicated to health through food; · Magic Bullets: 20 percent desire health, primarily through the easiest means available; · Fence-Sitters: 18 percent are neutral on most health issues; · Eat, Drink, and Be Merrys: 25 percent are unconcerned about health.
