"He was a close friend and he was a Christian kid," recalls Franklin. "We both were just in teenage rebellion, you know? I mean doing just what the people in our rough neighborhood were doing, whether it was smoking or drinking or getting involved in things that are wrong. Trying to find love the wrong places. It got where I didn’t do good in school, missed a lot of class. One day he was in his dad’s closet, looking for something and a gun fell from the top shelf I’ll never forget it. It killed him. It really shook me up. I’m just so glad that God allows the bumps in life, because he’s writing an incredible song that you can look back on and hear nothing but His grace."
